Rutherford and Son

Written by Githa Sowerby

Directed by Virginia Harrington

26 - 31 October 2015 at 7.45pm

This powerful Edwardian classic was written and staged in 1912 during the upsurge of the British feminist movement. The play deals with the oppressive patriarchal system of the industrial North in the early 1900s.

It is a story about a Yorkshire family ruled by Rutherford, the hard tyrannical ‘Master’ of his glassworks, and his children. All three are degraded and rejected but the bargain he is forced to make will ensure the beginning of change for the better and the empowerment of women.
